    Welcome to Year 5!

    Teacher Name: Mr. A. Scott

    Teaching Assistant(s): Ms. Benson

    Welcome to Year 5!

We are looking forward to a busy, fun and exciting half-term. The children will be learning lots of new things, building their confidence and developing their independence.

What are we learning this term?

    English

In English, we will be writing a dilemma narrative inspired by King Kong.
The children will explore stories where characters face difficult choices, danger and tension. We will look at how writers build suspense, describe settings, show characters’ feelings and use dialogue to move the story forward. By the end of the unit, the children will plan and write their own exciting dilemma story.

    Maths

In maths, we will continue working through our Year 5 Ready to Progress learning.
This will include practising key number skills, building fluency and solving problems. We will be revisiting important areas such as multiplication, division, factors, multiples, measure and reasoning. The children will keep working on explaining their thinking clearly and using efficient strategies.

    Science

Our science topic is Human Timelines.
We will be learning about how humans grow and change during their lives. The children will explore the different stages of human development, from babies to older adults, and think about how our bodies and needs change over time.

    Geography

In geography, we will be studying deserts.
We will discover what makes a place a desert, where deserts are found in the world and what desert environments are like. The children will learn about hot desert biomes, desert landforms, animals and plants that survive there, and how people use and live in desert areas. We will also think about some of the threats facing deserts today.

    Wider Curriculum

Across the wider curriculum, children will enjoy a range of creative and practical learning. In PE, we will be learning rounders, practising batting, fielding, throwing, catching, teamwork and fair play. In Computing, we will be creating stop motion animations, learning how to plan a short animation, take a sequence of photographs and make small changes between each shot to create movement. In Music, we will be exploring looping and remixing, using repeated musical patterns to build and change pieces of music. In Art and DT, we will be working on 3D building and sculpture, exploring how materials can be shaped, joined and combined to create structures. In Spanish, we will be learning vocabulary and phrases linked to food and drink. In PSHE, we will be focusing on transition to Year 6, thinking about change, new responsibilities, managing worries and preparing positively for the next school year.

    Class Routines

    PE Days

    Our PE days are:

    Monday and Tuesday

Children should come to school wearing their PE kit on these days.

    Water Bottles

Please send your child to school with a water bottle every day.

Bottles should contain water only. Children can refill them during the day.

    Homework and Spellings

Homework will be sent home on Friday and should be returned by the following Friday.

Each week, children will usually have:

    • reading activities
    • writing takes linked to our English learning
    • maths practice linked to current learning
    • humanities activities linked to geography or other wider curriculum subjects
    • spelling practice

Please support your child with reading and times tables as often as you can. Little and often is best.

Reading remains a really important focus in Year 5.
Children will read regularly in school, and we expect them to read at home at least 3–4 times each week. This could be reading to an adult, reading independently, or discussing part of a book together. Regular reading helps children build fluency, vocabulary and confidence.
