    Welcome to Year 2!

    Teacher Name: Mrs. Jones

    Teaching Assistant(s): Mrs. Edwards

We are so excited to welcome the children back to school for an exciting, fun-filled year of learning ahead.

The Year 2 classroom team consists of Mrs. Jones (Class Teacher) and Mrs. Edwards (Teaching Assistant). We are here to support your children every step of the way to ensure they have a happy, successful and enriching term.

What We Are Learning This Half Term

Here is an overview of what the children will be exploring across our subjects:

Religious Education (RE): Our topic is Creation and Covenant. The children will explore the biblical story of Creation and learn about God's special promise (covenant) with His people. We will reflect on how God created a beautiful world for us to live in and discuss how we can show stewardship by caring for God's creation.

English: We will be using the lovely book Leo and the Octopus as our central text. The children will start by writing their own friendship narrative, followed by creating an explorer's log. For our daily reading for pleasure, we will be reading the modern classic The Storm Whale together.

Maths: Our focus will be building a deep understanding of place value, reading, writing, and comparing numbers up to 100. Towards the end of the term, we will move on to strategies for addition and subtraction.

Science: We will explore Living Things and Their Habitats. Children will learn about food chains, micro-habitats, and how different animals adapt to survive in their environments.

History: We will dive into local history with the big question: "Why is Kitty Wilkinson remembered in Liverpool?" Children will learn about her bravery, her work during the cholera epidemic, and her lasting legacy in our city.

Art: Following the Kapow Primary scheme, our unit is Drawing: Tell a Story. Children will practice mark-making, line, and shading techniques to illustrate narratives.

PE: Our physical development sessions will focus on Fundamentals (agility, balance, and coordination) and developing essential Ball Skills.

Computing: We will be asking the fundamental question: "What is a computer?" to help children identify everyday technology and understand input and output devices.

Music: Our musical focus this term is Folksongs, exploring pitch, rhythm, and traditional vocal performance.

PSHE: Through myHappymind, we will explore two core modules: Meet Your Brain (understanding how our brains function and manage emotions) and Appreciate / My Happy Mind Places.
