We are so excited to welcome the children back to school for an exciting, fun-filled year of learning ahead.
The Year 6 classroom team for the Autumn Term consists of Mrs. Osborne (Class Teacher - Mon, Tues, Wed), Mr. Scott (Class Teacher - Thurs and Fri) and Mr. Wall (Teaching Assistant). We are here to support your children every step of the way to ensure they have a happy, successful and enriching term.
What We Are Learning This Half Term
Here is an overview of what the children will be exploring across our subjects:
Religious Education (RE): Our topics are Loving and Belonging. The children will explore the concept of family and how this is reflected in the Church and God's unconditional love for us. We will then go on to look at the need for commitment through the common priesthood of the faithful, considering how we can live out our faith within our family, school and wider community.
English: We will be using Rose Blanche as our central text - linking into other key historical fiction and non-fiction texts where possible, including the diary of Anne Frank. The children will use their knowledge from our History topic to supplement their wider understanding. Pupils will develop their use of a wide range of grammatical features for effect, as well as honing their use of vocabulary and formality to create and sustain an appropriate atmosphere in their writing. For our daily reading for pleasure, we will be reading the modern classic Letters from the Lighthouse together.
Maths: Our focus will be building a deep understanding and fluency within arithmetic - continuing to develop the use of times table knowledge, a sense of number and the ability to select the most efficient method to tackle a question. Children's confidence in reasoning and problem solving will be developed across the year - in this term focusing on number, place value and beginning to look at fractions.
Science: We will explore Light and Reflection. Children will learn about light travelling in straight lines, exploring how this causes, shadows, refraction and understanding how we see.
History: We will dive into local history with the big question: "How did a war so far away reflect our city?" We will look at key global events and their historical interpretations, before understanding the impact on Liverpool. Children will look at how different groups were affected, including women and children.
Art: Following the Kapow Primary scheme, our unit is Craft and Design: Photo Opportunity. Children will practice using their observational skills to take photos with different foci - macro, portrait and recreating famous artwork.
PE: Swimming lessons will develop children's skills in the water, including a range of strokes and their knowledge of water safety. Our in-school physical development sessions will focus on OAA (outdoor adventurous activities) and developing team work.
Computing: We will be looking at how technology has been developed over time, including the use of coding in Bletchley Park in our work on Computing Systems and Networks. We will also look at Online Safety as part of our ongoing safeguarding messaging.
Music: Our musical focus this term is developing the use of notation, with a particular focus on rhythmic notation through a theme of Electricity.
PSHE: Through myHappymind, we will explore two core modules: Meet Your Brain (understanding how our brains function and manage emotions) and Appreciate / My Happy Mind Places.
Key Class Information
Swimming will take place on Monday and PE will take place on Thursday.
Please ensure you are in the correct PE uniform on these days - including a swimming hat on Mondays.
Water bottles are permitted in the classroom and can be refilled throughout the day.
Homework / Spellings:
Homework will be given out on a Friday and should be returned on a Wednesday. This will consist of a short English activity, arithmetic questions for Maths and a creative/research activity for a foundation subject. This is intended to supplement in-class learning and will be looked at as part of our lessons.
Regular practice should be completed for: spellings, reading and times table facts.
